Is Agoraphobia Considered A Disability?

Agoraphobia is a mental health condition that can affect your daily life by causing extreme stress and anxiety surrounding leaving the home and visiting public places. This usually impacts even simple, everyday tasks. Some people suffering from this disorder may struggle to go to work, take their kids to school, and even maintain relationships.

Many people who struggle with agoraphobia have high levels of anxiety and suffer from panic attacks. When this disorder is severe, it can prevent an individual from keeping a job and earning a living wage. While advancements in technology and society have created numerous work-from-home opportunities, not everyone has the education or wherewithal to pursue these avenues.

If agoraphobia prevents you from working and significantly impacts other areas of your life, you may qualify for disability benefits. However, it’s important to turn to an experienced disability lawyer in South Jersey, to ensure your application materials are strong and you have the best chance of securing Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI).

Qualifying for Agoraphonia Benefits

In order to qualify for disability benefits with agoraphobia, you’ll need to gather substantial evidence that your disorder prevents you from earning a living wage and taking care of yourself in your daily life. Unfortunately, many people doubt that agoraphobia a disability, even though it’s been proven that people who suffer from agoraphobia can face severe and limiting symptoms. Knowing this, you can imagine how difficult it can be to convince the Social Security Administration (SSA) that you’re disabled because of your condition.

The truth is, agoraphobia is a real anxiety disorder that causes extreme fear and avoidance behaviors. An individual with this condition may avoid everything from going to the movies to shopping or taking a walk in the park. If left untreated, the condition can get much worse over time.

Symptoms of agoraphobia often include severe panic attacks which usually result in chest pains, shortness of breath, dizziness, and other symptoms.

In order to qualify for SSDI benefits with agoraphobia, a claimant must apply for benefits under section 12.06 in the Blue Book. The Blue Book is a comprehensive list of disorders and impairments that qualify individuals for SSDI.

In order to prove that agoraphobia impacts your daily life and activities, and that you’re unable to work, you must supply substantial medical evidence to support your claim, including records and statements from mental health professionals. You must also fulfill further requirements listed under section 12.06.
